Mercredi 5 février 2020, 17h-19h ENS, 45 rue d’Ulm, 75005 Paris Salle Cavailles, Couloir A-B, 1ier étage Tribalism and Cosmopolitanism : Dilemma in Elizabeth Cook-Lynn’s Indigenous Criticism
Characterized by the nature of closure in traditional Native American tribalism, the criticism and writings of contemporary Native American literature have entered into a crucial stage of development in the multicultural context. In constructing native intellectualism, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn highlights native tribalism and calls for the cosmopolitanism centered on native ethnicity. This perspective provides her with closer view of traditional native culture. Yet, the over-emphasis on the political function of the writing leads to her ignorance of textualities in the contemporary native writing. Her adherence to traditional native tribalism encounters much inconsistences in the modern multicultural environment and lacks practical strategy in literary writing. Limited by the binary mode of early post-colonialism, her critical strategy is rather trapped in practice. The construction of Native American literary criticism and writings should be shifted to the native features in writing strategies and the construction of native critical theory with distinct native American perspectives. Key words : Native American, tribalism, cosmopolitianism, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn

Mercredi 12 février 2020, 17h-19h ENS, 45 rue d’Ulm, 75005 Paris Salle Cavailles, Couloir A-B, 1ier étage Ethnicity in Transcultural Context : A Spatial Perspective on the Case study of Shadow Tag by Louise Erdrich
As one of the important elements of Native American culture, space has been absorbed into the ethnic contruction of contemporary Native American writings. It not only functions as symbols, but also constructs the narrative structure and thematic paragdim. The geological space has become one of the stable constants in the contemporary Native American literature. The reconstruction of self-awareness and identity of contemporary Native American culture based on this space, although interrrupted by various dynamic postmodern variables, can be made possible. As one of the leading figures of contemporary Native American writers, Louise Erdrich has constructed a literary space with peculiar ethnic feature accordingly, which hilights the interactive projection between historicity and textuality and portrays the true existential state of contemporary Native American culture. In the construction of Native American ethnicity, Louise Erdrich has extended its spatial sphere with rich textuality and enhanced its practicality with realistic style.
Mercredi 19 février 2020, 17h-19h ENS, 45 rue d’Ulm, 75005 Paris Salle Cavailles, Couloir A-B, 1ier étage Liminality and Transgression : Spatial Analysis of Identity Formation in The Little Mermaid
From the perspective of spatial theory, the present paper aims to analyze the construction of self in The Little Mermaid. The three spaces of the sea, land and sky are filled with intersections of liminal spaces and active efforts of transgression, which shapes little mermaid’s self in the dynamic process. The body of the little mermaid, as the center of space power construction, not only reveals the mechanism of power control during spatial transformation, but also highlights her spiritual transcendence during her decoding efforts. In this process, community does not play the decisive role in the shaping of self for the little mermaid, rather, the self is shaped during her confrontation against community from the margin.
